Poker Glossary

Are you a bubble boy? Do you know what that actually means? Are you familiar with the term connectors? Are outs something you’re comfortable with? Does the expression three bet ring a bell? If some or all of these typical poker words don’t sound familiar to you, there’s no need to despair because you can easily look them up in our online poker dictionary.

Poker terminology is quite extensive, and many of the terms aren’t easy for a beginner to understand, or not at all. To help you respond appropriately to someone discussing aces full in the chat, we’ve created this dictionary.

Abbreviations

  • A: Ace
  • K: King
  • Q: Queen
  • J: Jack
  • T: Ten
  • 2-9: the remaining cards with values 2-9
  • h: Hearts
  • d: Diamonds
  • s: Spades – Note: stands for “suited” and not for “spades” when used after a card combination (e.g., AQs)
  • c: Clubs
  • o: Off-Suit

Using the abbreviations above, you can easily form hands by placing the suits next to each other. Pocket cards consisting of a king and a jack are referred to as KJ, with the card with the highest value always mentioned first.

If the suit of the cards is important and, for example, you have a king of hearts and a jack of clubs, we would simply denote it as KhJc. If both cards are of the same suit (king of hearts and jack of hearts), we can choose to add only an “s” (KJs) to indicate that the cards are “suited” instead of having to write KhJh. Conversely, we can use an “o” when the cards are of different suits, so we could denote KhJc as KJo as in the previous example.

With the help of this poker dictionary, you will learn many poker terms that you may not already know. Although successful poker doesn’t mean you have to use all expressions all the time, it does help to master the basic poker terminology so you can better understand your fellow players discussing their strategy.

In some cases, the articles on OnlinePokerSitesUS.com also contain a lot of poker jargon; unless you can already distinguish pocket aces from suited connectors, you’ll find it easier to follow with the help of this dictionary.
