Poker Glossary

Poker terms beginning with a "U"

Uncapped

In No-Limit and Pot-Limit games, a situation where there is no upper limit on the amount that can be bet or raised.

Under the Gun

The position directly to the left of the big blind. This player must act first in the hand (bet, call, or fold). A commonly used abbreviation for under the gun is UTG. Also see big blind.

Under Pair

If the rank of the cards forming your pocket pair is lower than all the cards on the table, then you have an under pair. For example: you have 4 of Spades 4 of Hearts and the board shows 6 of Clubs 9 of Diamonds King of Hearts. See also over pair.

Up

The term up is used when you have two pair to denote the higher pair. For example, Jack of Spades Jack of Hearts 8 of Clubs 4 of Spades 4 of Clubs would be called "two pairs, jack up", because the rank of the lower pair only matters if your opponent also has "two pairs, jack up".

Up Card

The up card is the card dealt face-up. See also board or community cards.

Up the Ante

To increase the stakes or bets in a game.

UTG

UTG is a commonly used (written and spoken) abbreviation for under the gun.

Under the Gun Straddle

A voluntary blind bet made by the player under the gun, often used to increase the pot size and action in the game.

Unopened Pot

A pot where no player has made a bet or raise yet in the current betting round.

Unraised Pot

An unraised pot is a pot in which no player has raised during the current betting round.

Unsuited

Cards that are of different suits. E.g., 10 of Spades 9 of Hearts.

Upswing

A period of positive variance where a player is winning more than usual. Also see variance.
